Do you have the right # of smoke detectors?

Smoke detectors and your family’s safety

Now that Spring is here it’s a good time to change the batteries on your smoke detectors. When we are in customer’s homes we at NextWave Electric find they typically do not have the proper amount of smoke detectors that is required.

Where are detectors required?

Connecticut state building code requires:

  • smoke alarms – in each bedroom

  • a smoke alarm/carbon monoxide combination detector – outside of and in the direct vicinity of the bedrooms (typically the hallway)

  • a smoke alarm/carbon monoxide detector – on each level of the house (including the basement but not including the attic)

An easy and important DIY project

Installing smoke alarms is a project that many people can do themselves. And with the current social distancing you don’t have to go to the store –– Amazon, Home Depot and Lowe's will all ship direct to you.

New technology improves safety

Gone are the days of changing (and potentially forgetting to change) 9-volt batteries twice a year. The technology has improved to where detectors offer extended battery life of 10 years.

Also, whether you have a smart home or not there now units with wireless interconnecting between detectors. With that feature if something happens on one floor, all of the detectors are activated to warn everyone in the home.

Be safe when installing

Your safety is important to us so keep in mind:

  • Follow the manufacturer instructions when installing

  • If you do not feel comfortable on a ladder do not undertake a project like this

  • If your existing smoke alarm is connected to electrical wiring in your house, call a licensed electrician and do not change it yourself.

At NextWave Electric we hope that you and your family stay safe and healthy – especially during these challenging times due to the coronavirus. Do you have a project in mind? Contact us and we’ll be happy to come to your home when it’s safe to do so.
